On foreign money inflows and advances in local stocks, the rupee rose by 5 paise to 81.97 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday.
The currency fluctuated in an immediate range of 82.01 to 81.97 after opening 2 paise higher at 82 on the interbank foreign exchange market.
At 9.35 am, the rupee was trading at 81.97 versus the US dollar, up 5 paise from the previous close of 82.02.
The rupee’s mood in early trade was buoyed by foreign portfolio investments in equity and overnight declines in the US dollar on international markets, according to experts.
The dollar index, which measures the strength of the US dollar against a basket of six different currencies, remained virtually unchanged at 102.58.
Benchmark Brent crude prices were USD 72.76 per barrel higher, up 0.69 percent.

The 30-share BSE Sensex increased by 199.06 points or 0.31 percent to 63,615.09 points on the domestic equities market, while the wider Nifty increased by 62.75 points to 18,880.15 points.
According to exchange statistics, Foreign Portfolio Investors were net purchasers on Tuesday in the capital market, purchasing shares worth Rs 2,024.05 crore.
