The crypto community’s fears were verified by Mark Cuban on Friday, MetaMask: Report
The Dallas Mavericks owner, well-known US investor, and TV personality had one of his MetaMask wallets empty through what seems to be yet another successful phishing attempt.
On-chain data indicates that the total amount of the diverted monies is close to $900,000.
On Friday night, well-known crypto investigator WazzCrypto went on X to opine about whether Mark Cuban’s wallet had been compromised. Wazz said that despite the address being idle for over six months, the monies were abruptly transferred out of it.
The “Mark Cuban 2” wallet had some odd activity on Etherscan, including a $2 million USDC transfer and dumping all ETH on MATIC following a Coinbase transaction.
Address on Matic was a Coinbase deposit address
End of an era
But address on ETH swapped all USDC for $ETH so it's a very different behaviour. still possible he was drained on ETH and saved his Matic bags pic.twitter.com/V0siq5cPMT
Cuban verified the information in a statement to DL News, saying that he “went on MetaMask for the first time in months. They must have kept an eye on everything.
The owner of the NBA powerhouse later said that he was “pretty sure I downloaded a version of MetaMask with some shit in it,” suggesting that he was the most recent crypto community member to fall victim to a phishing assault.
Also highlighted was the aforementioned Coinbase transfer, which he claimed to have initiated himself in order to safeguard his other assets. Furthermore, he only used one of his MetaMask accounts, thus his other ones weren’t depleted.
Cuban and the cryptocurrency sector have a contentious history together. Years ago, he made the famous comment that he would prefer a banana over Bitcoin since the latter had higher usage. He eventually changed his mind, began to support BTC, ETH, and NFTs, and amassed a sizable portfolio.
