Mark Zuckerberg Expands Horizon Worlds Beyond Virtual Reality to Attract a Wider Audience to Its 3D Virtual Realm
Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, is taking a significant step by expanding the metaverse, Horizon Worlds, beyond virtual reality headsets and into the realm of smartphones and computers.

In a blog post dated September 15, the 3D avatar-based social platform announced the commencement of early access rollout for its first Meta Horizon world on mobile and web platforms.
Currently, the platform offers the Super Rumble experience, a free-for-all shooter that debuted in late July. It enables two to six players to engage in fast-paced matches lasting five minutes.
Meta has also assured users that additional experiences and worlds will be introduced to the platform in the months ahead.
Access to the platform will be restricted during this initial distribution period, with just a small number of users being able to log in using the web or the Android Meta Quest app. It is anticipated that an iOS release will happen in the upcoming weeks.
Meta’s Horizon Worlds
With a focus on gradual growth, meta has stated that more people will have access to early access as they gather feedback and improve the platform the technology behemoth emphasized its goal of creating a universal metaverse that people could access on a variety of devices saying the metaverse should be accessible to everyone regardless of the device they are using
The experience will be offered to a larger user population if Meta emphasizes expanding the accessibility of Worlds to a wider range of devices. Although Meta hasn’t provided any information on its monthly active users, a report by The Wall Street Journal in October 2022 suggested that there were fewer than 200,000 subscribers.
Meta’s social platform is still currently only available in Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
It’s important to keep in mind that blockchain-based metaverse systems like The Sandbox and Decentraland pursued a slightly different path. Decentraland debuted its browser-based 3D virtual environment in February 2020, and The Sandbox released its Alpha version for PC in November 2021.
They both had their initial releases as PC and web-based experiences. Notably, neither platform has officially released a virtual reality port.
“And while Quest headsets are the most immersive way to access the metaverse, we believe there should be multiple entry points.”
Exciting News!
Significantly, Meta avatars in Horizon Worlds have now experienced the long-awaited upgrading of virtual legs. After the initial release of his metaverse, Mark Zuckerberg came under fire from critics who noted that, despite the company’s significant expenditure, avatars lacked virtual legs.
In a future upgrade, anticipated to arrive in 2023, Meta promised that these legs would be a reality during Connect 2022.
The legs functionality was reportedly already introduced to Quest Home space some weeks ago as a v57 test version update, but some users have reported the legs have now made their way onto the Horizon Worlds app.
